What doors would a degree in linguistics open?
Q. Hi, I'll be choosing a university course soon and have looked into the Department of linguistics at Uof Toronto. It seems the course focuses on more psychological aspects of language, so what career options would this give me? Also, are there any alternative courses that focus more on the use and application of language rather than the core structure and roots of the language?

A. I've taken some Ling courses at Uof T - they have a really solid program. Some potential careers include ESL/foreign language teacher, speech therapist, translator, and interpreter. You can also get into computational linguistics and work with speech recognition and that sort of thing. I would recommend speaking with someone from the linguistics department or a career advisor at your school. But remember that whatever major you choose, you will have to take the good with the bad in terms of what interests you and what does not.
