Where can I find a detailed analysis of political rhetoric?
Q. I need either a scholarly article or a good book written on the subject; specifically I need somthing that focuses on the mechanisims of rhetoric when used to influence the masses especially in the case of politics.

A. I haven't read the book Sunshine recommends, but it looks excellent. Here's the link at Amazon: You might also try Political Communication: Rhetoric, Government, and Citizens by Dan F. Hahn. If you need something online quick, try this (it primarily deals with the relationship between political rhetoric and political violence):

Since when linguistic competence is a minus? I don't want another Bush media manipulation: all that the media has done in the States is questioning Obama as if he is the only candidate. Msc Cain keeps getting a free ride. The fact that Obama has been able to impress some of the news people is a testimony to how extraordinary he is. popularity: In his case popularity has been increasing cause his honesty and passion when he talks touches people and his ideals are high and woth pursuing. Does anyone believe the political rhetoric about the "free market" anymore?
Q. Corporate welfare is still welfare. Bush is just using double speak (again) to make sure his friends get financial help. If a business fails, it's not a good business. How could republicans still say the dems are socialists with a straight face?
Asked by neil s - Mon Nov 24 11:31:13 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Flaw, the difference is that everyone expects democrats to bail someone out. When a democrat says they want this amount of money so this company doesnt fold, no one raises an eyebrow. This is what we expect. When a republican, such as president bush, and the rest of the republicans in congress say that 'we are all about free market... but this time, we believe in socialism' it is completely against what they run on. "Its only socialism when free markets are doing good."

A. As you get older you will slowly realise just how pointless politics really are. Politicians' promises dissappear faster than lightning strikes. It is the general course of the party that indicates the route their policies will take, no matter what they say in the run-up to the election. In truth, the excuses used explaining why pre-election policies have not been followed tends to be the only content in the papers for months after the election. Of course, when the next election comes around, that's all forgotten about anyway; and no party ever brings that fact up because they all do the same thing. It appears that the further to the right that a candidate is, then the more likely they are to send their country to war. The left gets… [cont.]

Why do virtually all major political candidates in the USA constantly use rhetoric to present their ideas?
Q. It seems all the major candidates--from the right or left rarely use facts and data as the basis for their arguments and presentations. What is funny is that these are the people presenting solutions for the US and the world and they rarely reference facts. Even mid-level managers from mediocre organizations are expected to base their arguments on facts and would not be taken seriously if all they did all the time were to talk about a bunch of ideas for change without supporting data. I would love to see a valid candidate use facts and statistics to illustrate trends and perform comparative analysis with other industrialized nations on topics like health care, economic stability, business regulation, education, global issues, terrorism,… [cont.]
