How were Achilles and Agamemnon actually similar in the Iliad?
Q. How did Achilles and Agamemnon compare and contrast throughout the Iliad? Did anything show that if they weren't in such a huge quarrel that maybe perhaps they could be acquaintances?

A. Both men weren't just princes, but kings in their own right. The parallels are made quite clear by Nestor in the speech in which he tries to calm both men down in book one. Read that speech by Nestor, it answers many of your questions. One can also see deliberate parallels by Homer in the extended arming sequences each is given, two of only four in the entire epic. Another good place to find parallels between them is in Book 9, before the embassy is sent, when Agamemnon admits essentially that he has wronged Achilles and lists the things he'd do to get his help again in the war--all of the Greeks valued such material objects, but only one of them can be the overall king. Another place to look is just a bit outside of the Iliad, to… [cont.]

How much effect does the achilles tendon play in plantar fasciitis?
Q. My podiatrist says all the pain is caused from the tight achilles tendon, is it true.
Asked by The cool guy - Fri Jun 13 14:12:59 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It very well could be. If the achilles tendon is too tight, it would be causing constant pressure (pulling) on the Plantar facia, thus making it tired / sore.

Q. I am 9 weeks out after having a bone spur on the back of my heel removed and my achilles tendon reattached to the bone with anchors. Also, when will I be able to stand on my toes again? It seems impossible at this point. I have been walking again for three weeks.

Is there a quicker way to heal Achilles tendinitis?
Q. I was just told by a doctor that i have Achilles tendinitis from running too much too soon, and not easing into it. I know that resting it is the best way to recovery but i leave for boot camp in 10 days, and wondering if there is something i can do to speed up the healing process.

A. A heel lift in your shoe can minimize stress by putting slack in the calf muscle and Achilles tendon and give the condition more time to heal. Physical therapy incorporating stretching and eccentric strengthening exercises may ease the pain. Also, low-energy shock wave therapy has been proven useful in stimulating soft-tissue healing by increasing blood supply to the area treated. If you have any other questions about what to expect, you might look here:

What are the signs of a pop achilles tendon?
Q. From time to time i will tip toe and hear and feel my achilles tendon snap or pop, the pain is bearable but it is still there when it happens... Other than the initial pop their is no other pain in my achilles... What is it and what should i do?
Asked by spaded - Mon May 3 01:44:07 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. i don't know why the Achilles' would make popping sounds. it's definitely not torn or else you wouldn't be able to tip toe. it could be a little arthritis in your ankle joint. try going to a physical therapist to get it checked out. in the mean time, don't do anything that hurts the area or makes it pop.

Achilles???
Q. How can I get the swelling to go down. R.I.C.E does not work as I am well past the point where R.I.C.E. helps with the swelling and pain. I have had problems with my Achilles for over a year now and can't seem to get the swelling to go down. Any suggestions as to what I can do to make the swelling go down or vanish completely and have normal sized heal area again. Thank you.
Asked by Ashwee - Thu Apr 24 06:17:35 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I currently am having almost the same problem. A year and a half ago I suffered an achilles injury by first severely overstretching it, then had a small tear from simply standing on my tip toes. The HUGE mistake I now realize that i made was that I never stopped using it. I cut back on activity and stopped exercising, but should've casted it completely. Now I'm faced with an injury that won't heal because that window of opportunity for healing has passed, and the only thing left to do that I can think of is 2 months of total rest which Im starting in about a month. You can email me after 3 months or so if you want to see if it worked or not at wdbwdb111@yahoo.com. Maybe you could try some heel lifts to take some strain off the tendon. [cont.]

Who was the hero Achilles in Greek Mythology?
Q. Can anyone sum up Achilles, the great hero of the Trojan War? What were his origins? What events transpired throughout his life?
Asked by Jack - Tue Jul 14 22:05:09 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just pasted this from wiki:- In Greek mythology, Achilles was a Greek hero of the Trojan War, the central character and the greatest warrior of Homer's Iliad. Achilles also has the attributes of being the most handsome of the heroes assembled against Troy. Later legends (beginning with a poem by Statius in the first century AD) state that Achilles was invulnerable in all of his body except for his heel. Legend states that Achilles was semi-immortal, however his heel was vulnerable. Since he died due to a poisoned arrow shot into his heel, the "Achilles' heel" has come to mean a person's principal weakness. Achilles was the son of the nymph Thetis and Peleus, the king of the Myrmidons. Zeus and Poseidon had been rivals for the… [cont.]

Asked by love dance - Fri Aug 7 19:00:30 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. here are some steps to follow: Step 1Stop what you're doing and rest the injured area - that is, refrain from participating in the activity that precipitated the pain until the swelling has subsided. Step 2Take two ibuprofen every 4 to 6 hours with the onset of symptoms. Step 3Apply ice for 20 to 40 minutes every 2 hours, for 24 to 48 hours. Wrap a plastic bag of ice in a towel before placing it against the skin, or soak the foot in a cooking pot or stream of icy water. This will decrease swelling, pain and inflammation. Step 4Compress the swollen area by wrapping it in an elastic bandage, ace bandage or athletic tape to limit movement and reduce swelling, allowing the tendons to rest. Step 5Elevate the injured area to above the level… [cont.]

How long to walk after a partial achilles tear?
Q. I was just put in a boot today for a partial achilles tear and a few other calf muscle issues. The incident happened about 5 days ago. Does anyone have any estimates as to when I'll at least be able to stop using crutches and put pressure on the foot to walk in the boot?
Asked by Gee - Tue Jun 15 23:24:33 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi, I am a physical therapist. A partial achilles tendon tear can take six to eight weeks to heal. This does not mean you will not be able to put pressure on it for that long. Swelling and the extent of the tear will determine how quickly you will be able to put weight on it. For some additional information check out this site: Hope this helps.

Why does my achilles tendon hurt when I wake up?
Q. I've had tightness and pain in my right, and sometimes left, achilles tendon for the past several weeks. The strange thing is, it only seems to be when I first wake up in the morning. As the day progresses it feels as though it gets stretched out and back to normal. I've done nothing physically that could have caused this, no over-exertion of the area through running or other sports. Any idea what/why this could be?
Asked by Martin S - Mon Aug 24 07:43:56 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I get this as well and was confused as to why. It turned out to be a simple answer. I at times sleep on my stomach and sometimes on my back. Both ways lead to my toes pointing down. So when I wake up and start to move especially when I step on the floor my achilles then start to stretch causing some discomfort. I find that if I wake at all during the night I flex my feet back and forth or due so before I get out of bed and it alleviates most of it.

A. The big one is "Achilles' girl," but how about this? -Achilles felt that Agamemnon was trying to abuse his power, and Agamemnon felt that Achilles was just as lowly as any old soldier. -Achilles was enraged that Agamemnon jepordized the entire Greek fleet over a selfish desire. -Agamemnon was a bitter soul who saw Achilles as being in the way of his own fame and fortune.

How long does it take to return to basketball after surgery on an achilles tendon?
Q. basically they want to cut half of my achilles tendon where it attaches to the bone and clear out scar tissue and stuff from an old surgery I'd had as a baby... anyone have any ideas how long that'll take to heal so i can play again and what the actual surgery and recovery would include?
Asked by K K - Sun Oct 17 06:43:53 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. K K, there are a lot of variables to this. One is the shape you are in going into the procedure. The better the shape the better the results. How tight is the tendon? If it is very tight then you are going to require a longer rehab time. The reason for this is that you are going to have to master the use of the extra range of motion. You will also have to develop more strength in an area that the muscle has not worked. What kind of surgery did you originally have and why? These are all important factors in the recovery time. You should count on being out of basketball for about 6 months depending on the severity of the surgery and your dedication to your rehab.

Asked by Michael T - Mon Mar 10 00:01:37 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The only source for the famous Achilles' Heel origin was a preserved fragment of Achilleis, an incomplete poem written by Statius in the !st Cent. AD. Publius Papinius Statius is a Roman poet of the Silver Age of Latin Literature. About the death of Achilles in the hands of Paris, Paris actually aimed for the heart but the god Apollo guided the arrow to the heel of Achilles. My research on this have only yielded that it was a joint work of Homer and Aeschylus. All the time I thought that it was from the Iliad.

How long does it take for an Achilles strain to heal?
Q. I've strained my achilles tendon about a week ago and it still feels kind of funny. I'm 14 years old, how long should it take to heal?
Asked by Hai2u - Thu Oct 2 18:41:34 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 2 to 3 weeks for tendon healing, needs support, ice, contrast baths, and gentle stretching. The worse the strain, the longer the healing. Wear good shoes, no flip flops or sandals. Give yourself a chance to heal up.

Why does the achilles heel show more on some people more than others?
Q. I've noticed that some people have a more narrow achilles heel, which is the back of the foot below the calf, right above the heel of the foot. At first I thought It was because of weight. Fat people = less shows achilles heel. Skinny/athletic = more shows achilles heel. But I've noticed that this is not true because some fat people actually have more show of their achilles than skinny people and vice versa. how would you tone fat around the ankle so that the achilles tendon shows??
Asked by Andre The Giant - Sat Nov 18 00:00:42 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. People with tight Achilles tendon usually have it more pronounced. You will also notice a certain "bounce" when they walk. Other than that, there is no correlation between the width of the Achilles tendon and body habitus.

What can you do for cardio exercise if you have achilles tendinitis?
Q. I was just diagnosed with achilles tendinitis. I go to the gym three times a week, and would like to keep my cardio up. Does anyone have suggestions that will not aggravate the condition?
Asked by Roger S - Tue Apr 20 18:45:10 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Please don't use extreme measures. The best way to keep your body healthy is to eat well and do regular exercise. If you have an injury, I'd talk to your doctor before doing anything just to be sure you don't make your condition worse, but swimming is often recommended to people who need low impact cardio. It's a great, all over body workout that doesn't put much pressure on your joints.

A. Like the person here said...try to slow down a bit on your work out, if not, try ice before and after the run. Like you may have high arches or may exercise in a way that puts stress on your Achilles tendon. You may have tight hamstring and calf muscles in your upper and lower leg. Your Achilles tendon may be tight, thick, and unable to stretch very well. Your tendons become stiffer and easier to injure as you get older. If you can stretch, try doing calf stretches, put a towel under the ball of your foot leg straight and pull back and hold for 15 to 20sec. thats to stretch the Gastroc muscle, to stretch the Soleus, do the same but this time bent the knee just a little and do the same. Good luck, feel better a a
