In Greek mythology, Achilles (Ancient Greek: Ἀχιλλεύς, Akhilleus, pronounced [akʰillěu̯s]) was a Greek hero of the Trojan War, the central character and the greatest warrior of Homer's Iliad. Plato named Achilles the handsomest of the heroes assembled against Troy. Later legends (beginning with a poem by Statius in the 1st century AD) state that Achilles was invulnerable in all of his body except for his heel. As he died because of a small wound on his heel, the term Achilles' heel has come to mean a person's principal weakness. From Wikipedia under the

Q. We play 2-3 hours of beach volleyball everyday. During the sessions my achilles muscle starts to hurt making it harder to walk. I usually still play through. The pain is gone quick and the leg recovers in a day or so and I can extend my leg and walk after this period normally. Should I stop playing, and if so for how long? I used to have that problem, especially a few years ago through the winter, early spring/late fall -- basically when it was colder in the mornings. I talked to a Doctor friend of mine, and she let me know that I had "Tendon-osis" -- worse than tendinitis because it was recurring inflammation. She prescribed rest, icing 3 x day, plus copious amounts of Ibuprofen. Since I am not a doctor, I will not say what she told me to take. She then recommended some simple PT exercises after 3-4 weeks rest. These included simple, slow calf raises off the ground (level surface), then the same off an elevated surface after a few weeks, and also doing the alphabet with the ankles.
